Eric Fowler

Eric FowlerEric Folwer has been documenting the everyday world around us through his paintings for well over a quarter of a century. His work has been compared to that of American painter Edward Hopper. While Hopper was considered a realist, Fowler is better described as an expressionist, as his work is an expression of inner experience rather than solely realistic portrayal, as he seeks to depict not objective reality but the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events arouse in him. While human forms occasionally dot his canvas, they do so in a subordinate role, as the real focus of Eric’s work is the architecture and landscapes that the figures occupy. The interplay of strong, colorful light and dramatic shadows define the shapes and their inherent details while telling the viewer so much more than meets the eye about the buildings and neighborhoods Eric depicts.

Eric has had numerous one-man shows and group exhibitions up and down the East Coast including the Society of Illustrators in New York City, Philadelphia Sketch Club, The Gallery at Chapin in Princeton, NJ, and Isadore Gallery in Lancaster, PA, to name but a few. His work can also be found in many private and permanent collections including the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators, the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission and The Junior School in Princeton, New Jersey.

Eric currently lives is Manhattan with his wife Palma.
